Hi Jeff,

I have been covering a spate of New Orleans homicides involving young women within the last month. Five of the six victims had children, some as young as six months.

Reports I'm gathering from the scenes indicate at least two of the victims (Simmons, Anderson) were targeted in retaliatory killings. Those sources say members of feuding gangs are targeting women.

From a data perspective, how often do we see six women killed in New Orleans by GSW in a month? I think the last time we had a double homicide involving two women was 2015, and that was a mother and daughter. What do you think is going on here? Feel free to call: 504-209-2710.

These are the victims:

4.20.23, Erin Pellebon, 44, b f, preliminary COD: gsw, Louisa St./N. Robertson St.

4.25.23, Sully Simmons, 33, b f, preliminary COD: gsw, Orleans Ave./N. Broad St.

5.11.23, Asia Corrion Davis, 28, b f, preliminary COD: gsw, Mayo Blvd./South I-10 Service Rd.

5.12.23, Imani Williams, 20, b f, preliminary COD: gsw, 1000 North Claiborne Ave.

5.12.23, Jadiamond Jones, 20, b f, preliminary COD: gsw, 1000 North Claiborne Ave.

5.20.22, Neisha Anderson, 24, 6000 Beechcraft St.

Hello,

Enjoyed what I have read here thus far.

Apologies for what I feel may be a somewhat indelicate question. It seems to me that most of your discussions where historical data is presented don't mention the pandemic in our recent history. I could missing that element(having only recently being able to sit down and read a few your posts). If I am not, is there a reason for this absence?

Thanks in Advance,

Chris

We hear very little about non-fatal shootings. Were it not for the skill of the doctors at University Medical Center the situation in New Orleans would be much worse than it is and would rank us as probably the most dangerous city in the entire world. Would you agree?

Hi Jeff,

I would be interested in a data primer on lethal violence in America. Some Qs that might figure in:

1) share of deaths attributable to suicide and the "four types" of homicide (DV/IPV, community violence, mass casualty, and officer-involved).

2) how those are trending over time

3) what we know about almost-lethal events versus lethal (e.g., non-fatal shootings vs fatal shootings)

4) the role of guns and other weapons in this violence

5) the overlap between the categories in (1). E.g., relationship between lethal violence in DV vs community violence vs mass casualty.

6) are these even the right categories (i.e., are there better categories for differentiating lethal violence).

Keep up the good work!

A while ago you linked to a dashboard for traffic violations, noting that the volume of citations fell in 2019 and coincided with the 2019 cyber attack. However, it looks like volume of traffic tickets remains low. Any insight into why so few tickets have been issued since 2019?

Longtime and loyal Jeff-alytics reader here.

I am particularly interested in seeing more data about juvenile crime. Anecdotally it seems to be up, but I’m interested to know:

1) Are different age groups of juveniles seeing particular spikes in crime?

2) Are juveniles being victimized by crime at a higher rate than in previous years?

3) Is there a difference in the prevalence of certain crimes committed by juveniles?

4) How much of the increase in overall crime can be attributed to juvenile crime?

5) Are there bright spots to celebrate or research-based actions our community can (/should) be taking to reduce the prevalence of juvenile crime?

You wrote in April that delayed response times are responsible for some of the reported decrease in crime in New Orleans. First, has there been any response to that, you know, from the city? Second, do you have a rough sense of whether, as usual, crime is falling locally, just more slowly than it is nationally?

I am curious about domestic violence data and the number of violent deaths associated with DV. With the perceived rise of DV during the pandemic it highlighted the lack of good DV data in many communities. Is someone doing a good job with this? Are you able to filter DV homicides in major cities to see trends?.

Do we have any decent data on the extent to which gun-ownership foils crime attempts? Do any jurisdictions regularly include this in crime or attempted crime reports, and if so are we seeing any trends along with the increase in gun purchases over the past few years.?

Hi Jeff: Previous question, your take on BJS and their latest (2021) report on national crime. Both they and the FBI claimed that national crime was flat. I sent you my analysis . Best, Len.
