Things have been a bit light over here the last few weeks, partly because I’ve been traveling and partly because I’ve been working on a piece for another publication. Regardless, I'd like to do a reader mailbag about crime trends and crime/policing data.
I'm not fully confident that I have enough consistent readers with good questions. In the spirit of proving me wrong, put your questions in the comments below. I'll try to answer as many as I can unless they're too hard or aren't softball questions. So fire away below!
Hi Jeff,
I have been covering a spate of New Orleans homicides involving young women within the last month. Five of the six victims had children, some as young as six months.
Reports I'm gathering from the scenes indicate at least two of the victims (Simmons, Anderson) were targeted in retaliatory killings. Those sources say members of feuding gangs are targeting women.
From a data perspective, how often do we see six women killed in New Orleans by GSW in a month? I think the last time we had a double homicide involving two women was 2015, and that was a mother and daughter. What do you think is going on here? Feel free to call: 504-209-2710.
These are the victims:
4.20.23, Erin Pellebon, 44, b f, preliminary COD: gsw, Louisa St./N. Robertson St.
4.25.23, Sully Simmons, 33, b f, preliminary COD: gsw, Orleans Ave./N. Broad St.
5.11.23, Asia Corrion Davis, 28, b f, preliminary COD: gsw, Mayo Blvd./South I-10 Service Rd.
5.12.23, Imani Williams, 20, b f, preliminary COD: gsw, 1000 North Claiborne Ave.
5.12.23, Jadiamond Jones, 20, b f, preliminary COD: gsw, 1000 North Claiborne Ave.
5.20.22, Neisha Anderson, 24, 6000 Beechcraft St.
Hello,
Enjoyed what I have read here thus far.
Apologies for what I feel may be a somewhat indelicate question. It seems to me that most of your discussions where historical data is presented don't mention the pandemic in our recent history. I could missing that element(having only recently being able to sit down and read a few your posts). If I am not, is there a reason for this absence?
Thanks in Advance,
Chris
