I was a college cop in the early 90s, and we went full NIBRS from the get-go. What is taking agencies so long to switch over? Is there any benefit to coercing compliance? I read the other day that Florida agencies are doing a really poor job of reporting. Wondering about forcing compliance by threatening to withhold funds as was with speed limits and drinking ages.

Good writeup - it's a tricky topic but this is helping me get closer to understanding it.

Jeff, have you used the CDC to check against the FBI's homicide numbers? When I ask the CDC's "Wonder" database for homicides by year, it shows 2019: 19,141. 2020: 24,576 and 2021: 26,031.

2022 will probably be released in December. The nice thing about the CDC data is cause of death is legally required to be reported, but of course it doesn't cover other crimes besides homicide. There might be other issues with their data that I'm not aware of.

Thanks for the clarification. Why isn't the FBI offering this ? Good article. Len.
